Using Speedport 4 as a modem

Hey folks,

 

I do have an Internet from Telekom. My router is Speedport Smart 4. Also I have Asus RT-AC86U that I use for Wi-Fi mostly (because Telekom plug is in the corner of a room, from where it is not possible to serve Wi-Fi.

 

As far as I understand - the proper setup in such a case would be to use Asus device as a router and set Telekom in Modem (bridge) mode.

I tried to do so: switched Speedport Smart into a "DSL Modem" and tried to configure ASUS for the PPPoE connection, but I would not say it is super straightforward.

 

Is there any instructions available how to configure Speed Port device to use together with Asus or other device as a main router?

 

What I found in the Internet (did not work):

 

the user name for a PPPoE connection is the T-Online connection ID+T-Online access number+Mitbenutzernummer+@t-online.de.

The password is the personal password.

Anschlusskennung + T-Online Nummer + 0001@t-online.de (als fortlaufende Nummer eingeben, keine Leerzeichen, kein „+“)

      Telekom runs the PPPoE-Session on VLAN 7. I'm bout not (stupid autocorrect!) sure whether the Speedport performs the VLAN tagging when in modem mode, so it may be necessary to configure the Asus to do it. Do you know if it is capable of doing that?

      Unfortunately  I am not an expert in networking, so have no idea what VLAN Tagging is. Just seen PPPoE configuration in it and thought that would be possible to do Fröhlich

       

      Quick googling says:

      > None of the Asus RT- models contain a modem. They are wireless routers designed to be connected to a separate modem. The Asus DSL- models have built-in modems.

       

      But isn't all the modem functions are supposed to be handled by Speedport Smart 4 in case it runs in "DSL Modem" mode? Wondering why I even need to configure something on top of that in Asus...

       

      Also found this thread and it seems in ASUS-RT-* routers support tagging, but somehow it seem to be related to IPTV configuration.

       

      What would be the proper setup in this case? Currently I switched ASUS router to access point mode (which makes it 120 EUR switch :P) to not run 2 routers same time.

      It works perfectly for a single room the router is in (guest room). Unfortunately in the bedroom signal is not that strong (maybe walls are too thick) and there are 3 walls on the signal way. My wife was complaining that Youtube is not running smoothly in bedroom on her 2012-year macbook air. Maybe re-configuring WiFi channels would help though.

      Hi, invis,

      How coincident, that I am also struggling with the same topic right now, and I got same level of frustration.

      (for a while, I thought I switch Google Page Translation on, because I also use English daily).

      I am not this if this helps -- Asus support page (https://www.asus.com.cn/support/FAQ/1034366/, in Chinese) mentioned how to set up VLAN tagging:

      1. go to Dual WAN, enable it, set up preferred WAN into e.g. LAN1, and 2nd as original WAN interface.  Apply the change.
      And of course followed by connecting from SpeedPort LAN4 in ASUS LAN1.

      2. go to LAN-> IPTV -> ISP Profile, Manual setting-> WAN VID as 7, apply the change. 

      3. set up correct PPPoE dailing information.

       

       

      However, I've done all of them, it doesn't work for your.
