hier ist beschrieben, wie Sie in Thunderbird einrichten, dort ist auch zu entnehmen, wie es imap wird. Wenn Sie auf imap umstellen, dann verbeiben die Mails auch auf dem Server, also so wie Sie es gerne hätten:
