[English] New SIM card when porting number

Hi!

My wife currently has a prepaid contract with another provider which decided to leave her without signal and customer support is unreachable. So, we decided to switch the provider to Telekom.

Although we know the steps we need to follow to port her number to Telekom, we were wondering if the new SIM card she'll receive can be used until her old phone number is assigned to it or how does that work? In other words, will she have service with Telekom meanwhile the porting is taking place?

Thanks in advance!

Actually I am not sure what your question is...

You will receive a new SIM from Telekom. Which either is a physical one, a SIM to plug in - or an electronic version, an eSIM (means there is some tech in the smartphone that will allow to "store" an electronic SIM).

In your thread opening you show an iPhone 12. That can handle both a physical SIM and an eSIM - also in parallel with the old SIM as long as it is not deactivated (it will only be deactivated if you have sent a termination message to the old provider).

If you have the iPhone 12 as old phone then you can use that together with the new Telekom SIM.

And once you will have a new phone then you can easily switch, use the Telekom SIM in the new phone.

So the question is - what exactly is your question.

      Thanks for the reply.

Since we don't know how the schedule of the porting works, the question is stated at the end of my first post: will she have service with Telekom meanwhile the porting is taking place?

She receives a new SIM from Telekom. Can she start using it with the number it comes with or does she need to wait for her number to be assigned the chip?

Once she has a Telekom SIM card this will have a phone number - either a pre-assigned one (by Telekom choice) or "your" ported number.

In case of a pre-assigned number you will no more be able to get the so far known number ported in. So if you want to keep this familiar number then you must wait for Telekom porting this familiar number.

Porting of the number lasts up to typically few hours during night time - legally maximum one day.

      Hello @sgurpegui,

in order to port your wife's number to us, the number has to be "released" by the former provider in the first place.

This is called opt-in. But since you say that you cannot contact this provider, you might not be able to set the opt-in?

Do you have customer center access?

Could you try to do it there?

If I order a SIM card for your wife, whether as prepaid tariff or postpaid, the number cannot be ported subsequently to the ordered SIM! This has to be noted during the order.

Please try to contact the former provider. If this doesn't work, we'll find your wife a nice number from our pool.

If you want to do without the number right away, I can arrange a call back for you in English Fröhlich Unfortunately, I can't do so Fröhlich

      Warm greetings,

      Anna Lena L

Thanks for your reply, @Anna Lena L.

Her current provider allows her to submit the opt-in through email with a letter, so that's not an issue.

Maybe I'm not explaining correctly. What I want to know is if the new SIM card comes with a phone number assigned so she can start using internet on her device right away or should we wait for the porting to finish. If it's the latter, how much it usually takes?

I understand the process would be:

On day 0, she submits the opt-in to her current provider to bring her number to Telekom

      - Also on day 0, she selects a prepaid plan from Telekom, fill all the necessary information and pay

      - On day X, she gets the new SIM card from Telekom > Here comes my question. Des that SIM card already have a random number so she can start using the prepaid plan she contracted?

      - On day Y, the porting of the phone number finishes and she has her phone number assigned to the new SIM card from Telekom

She basically wants to know how soon she can use internet on her mobile again to decide whether she makes the switch or she just keeps fighting with her current provider.
