Xplora X5 Play with Smart Connect S Prepaid - Activation abroad

vor 4 Jahren

Sorry, I do not speak German so I will try English.

Dear community and Telekom help team,

I'm interested in the Xplora X5 Play kids watch, but I have a hard time understanding if it would operate in Latvia, where I live. I have already written to the 3 main providers in Latvia asking if the device would work in their networks, but they don't give any guarantees. The most detailed reply was from Tele2. They answered that it depends if seller is blocking some particular frequencies in the device - which does not make it clearer to me.

My next idea is then to use Smart Connect S Prepaid which purportedly is en EU roaming card. I did write a question about it to Xplora's own support. They could not tell if it would work abroad in general and specifically if the activation would work from abroad. They suggested that I direct these questions here. So here I am.

Also - which would be a better bet - eSIM or classical SIM?

I'm looking forward to your answers and suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Reinis

      Hi @Reinis Z.
      A Prepaidcard from Germany cannot be used permanently in another EU-Country. This is even prohibited by EU-Regulation.
      You can also obtain the XploraX5 from the manufacturer. https://myxplora.de/collections/x5-play/products/x5-play

      @Reinis Z.

      Here is a note from the consumer advice center Germany: https://www.verbraucherzentrale.de/wissen/digitale-welt/mobilfunk-und-festnetz/roaming-in-der-eu-wichtige-fragen-und-antworten-13742

      There are a number of exceptions: For example, you may not have your full data volume available. Even those who live permanently in one country but have a mobile phone contract in another can be exempt from free roaming.

      Since you can order the watch directly from the manufacturer, almost every SIM card will work. Telekom also offers this watch, but every card should work. Here is the list of possible nano SIM cards (no eSim !!) for the X5Play: https://support.myxplora.com/hc/de/articles/360003360253

      Unfortunately, Latvia is not included, so ask the manufacturer: https://myxplora.de/pages/kontakt

      Your help is really appreciated, @Gelöschter Nutzer.
      I read the relevant paragraphs from your source. Unless something is lost in translations, it says the same as my source. It reads to me that one may get less data for the same money. It does not read to me that one "cannot" use it or that it would be "prohibited"(?).

      Your confidence encourages me although I'm still not sure considering those doubtful answers from the manufacturer and my local providers.

      As stated in my original post, I did write to Xplora. And I did read the relevant articles on their support platform.

      Unfortunately we can't tell if our products would work in Latvia, primarily because it hasn't been tested there yet and therefore we don't know if any Latvian providers would be compatible.

      This and the other 3 negative answers is what originally made me think about the Telekom alternative. If I could activate and use the prepaid card for the first month (and onward if necessary), I would not in risk of buying a dumb-watch worth ~170 euros.

      @Reinis Z.

      What is the watch all about? Should it be for a child or do you want to use it yourself?
